Leaf chains

In this simplest design of a link chain, the plates rotate on pins that are riveted or secured with cotter pins. A subtype of this chain category is also known as the Galle chain, named after its inventor André Galle (1761–1841). Another subtype is the leaf chain. It consists only of plates and pins. This type is primarily used as a load chain for cranes and hoisting equipment. Leaf chains generally possess a higher tensile strength than roller chains and are guided over toothless rollers (hence the name) instead of sprockets; therefore, no torque can be transmitted from the wheel to the chain. The leaf chain is suitable for hanging, oscillating, or motion-transmitting applications. Leaf chains are often used as tension or counterweight chains for machine tools, elevator doors, forklifts, spinning machines, and similar lifting or load devices.
